COMPLETE GUIDE TO ICM INTENTIONAL CAMERA MOVEMENT: TECHNIQUE AND ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION

follow me on Instagram Julia Anna Gospodarou

Intentional Camera Movement or ICM is a creative way of working with long exposure photography and it implies deliberately moving the camera during an exposure. ICM is both a technique and an artistic way of expression. It can be used as a tool to modify reality, with the intent of creating an emotional response in the viewer.

There is not much free information you can find about intentional camera movement online, Continue reading →

ABOUT CREATING ART AND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY

follow me on Instagram Julia Anna Gospodarou

I have to state from the beginning,ย thisย is not aย “How to”ย article. This is not a problem-solving article, in the true sense of the word, but more a philosophical one, of the type of me discussing with you about art and fine art photography, over a glass of wine, by the fireplace, on a cold winter night, or over a cup of hot coffee, depending on the taste.

Between us, I do think philosophizing now and then can solve a lot of problems and give many answers, when it comes to art and fine art photography, but that might be just me and my meditative nature when it comes to art.

So, if you want something practical,ย you may want toย stop reading and do something else instead. Or wait for my next tutorial that Iย amย writing now, and that I felt the need to interrupt so I can get a bit philosophical. I’ll publish the tutorial very soon if you don’t want to miss it you can subscribe and will receive it by email. But if you want to hear me meditatingย about art and fine art photography, youโ€™re welcome, and I always like goodย company in these reflective moments. So, if youโ€™re still around, pour yourself a nice glass of wine (or a hot cup of coffee) and letโ€™s chatโ€ฆ

WHERE DOES ART START?

WHEN YOU THINK AND FEEL DIFFERENTLYโ€ฆ

I think this is where art starts. I think this is when we feel the need to express ourselves when the way we look at the world is different than how others look at it, and we see and feel this difference. That is the moment when we feel the need to show this difference to the others, we want to communicate it to them because we are excited about what we see and feel and we need to externalize it.

ART AS A WAY OF COMMUNICATING: SHARING YOUR WORK WITH OTHERS

Minor White was saying at some point that art becomes art only when you show it to the Continue reading →

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016!

Happy New Year 2016!

2015 has been a great year and Iโ€™m grateful for that.

Iย haveย met and worked with wonderful people: friends, students, collaborators. I have traveled with my workshops, lectures, assignments,ย ย to many places in the world and each one of them was a great experience. ย I was lucky to be able to express my creativity the way I felt to do it, with no restrictions, and the response to my work was more than I had wished for.

For that I thank you all: students, clients, collaborators and friends.

Hopefully, 2016 is going to be even better for everyone.

I am looking forward to new challenges in the new year, new experiences and exciting photography projects, and to meet new interesting people. I’m starting the year with a few new ideas that you will see very soon and I’m looking forward to meeting you at my workshop in New York in May and also elsewhere in the world. Continue reading →

BLACK AND WHITE PROCESSING WITHOUT SELECTIONS IN LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHYโ€“ SEA OF DEVOTION II

Black and White Processing Without Selections in Landscape Photography

Working without selections or with just a few, seems to be counter-intuitive if you consider the elaborate way I process my images generally but in this image I experimented with it to see how far I can go.

The conclusion is that, even if not having accurate selections to control the image in depth, I still had a certain level of control by using the other tools in a smart way. This kind of processing is more suited for landscape photography than for architecture, because in landscape photography one can be more permissive with outline than in architecture photography.

A very good tool I have used and I am using when I can is the “Edge Aware” function in Topaz Labs B&W Effects which is a tool that allows you to paint an effect inside an outline without spilling it outside the outline. The tool understands the edges and keeps the effect you apply inside the border. This is one of the best tools inย Topaz Labs B&W Effects and one of my most used.

About the image

Shot in the Attica Peninsula,ย a few days ago, while scouting for my next private workshop in Athens, I tried on Sea of Devotion IIย a new way of processing, a black and white processing without selections.
If you want to book a private workshop with me, you can do it here: Private workshops & Mentoring Courses with Julia Anna Gospodarou.
I would be happy to teach you everything I know about black and white fine art and take you to the best locations in wonderful Athens or anywhere else in the world.

I was born a traveler and I was born an artist. You can trust me 100%, this is what I love to do most: share my knowledge and show others the best places for photography in the Continue reading →

THE MEANING OF BLACK AND WHITE โ€“ SEA OF DEVOTION I

follow me on Instagram Julia Anna Gospodarou

In this article, I will be analyzing the meaning of black and white through the wayย we conceive the photograph.

SHORT INTRO – FUTURE PLANS

I’ll be in London in a couple of weeks to film a series of lectures and tutorials on black and white Fine Art Photography for a prestigious UK photography school where I’ll start teaching very soon. More details on this very soon, but whatย Iย can already say is that it is going to be a very exciting experience that I’m looking forward to, also an honor, since this school chooses its instructors very carefully and they work only with the best photographers and authors of best-selling photography books, with international distinctions in the field of photography.

The lectures will be based on myย book “From Basics to Fine Art – Black and White Photography”.ย Right now I’m working on a few images, some landscapes too, to present there next to my architectural work. Thisย is one of them.

ABOUT THE IMAGE – CONCEIVING AND SHOOTING

It’s been a while since I published my last landscape, so this was a good moment to post one.

I’ve shot this image at sunset, end of summer, in Western Greece, close to the historical town of Messolonghi, in the Messolonghi Lagoon, an area where nature is magnificent and Continue reading →

First impressions Formatt Hitech Firecrest 16 stops ND filter

My first impressions Formatt Hitech Firecrest 16 stops ND filter – the BRAND-NEW Firecrest circular ND filter

Feeling inspired…
This is my first image shot with the BRAND-NEW circularย Formatt Hitech Filtersย Firecrest 16 stops ND filter that I have just received a few days ago, and with the T/S lens + Canon 5D MKIII, and it is a landscape!
Surprise?!!!
Yes, I’m an architecture lover but I’m in love with nature too. I wanted to work on some landscape for a long time (the last landscape work I did was at Christmas) but I was totally absorbed this year by architecture, by writing the book (From Basics to Fine Art, my mentorships, workshops and other projects.
Until I received the new Firecrest! This filter is so easy to use and it gives you such great results that it inspired me to go back in nature and shoot some new work. And I’m so glad I did it! I had forgotten how great it is to be face to face with the immensity and beauty of nature. Where you need no words because just by looking at the scenery, by Continue reading →

ย Wishing to all my friends, followers, students and collaborators a lot of all these above and many more.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!

I took this image in the Mountains of Pindus, Greece, on a very cold winter day when I was experimenting with different effects among which ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) and NFLE (Natural Frosty Lens Effect) which is what you see here. This is not some effect added in post but the natural look and softness the frost on a lens can Continue reading →

Iโ€™m in โ€œreflectionsโ€ mood these days. Shooting reflections is one of the most exciting things in photography, and it can be one of the hardest too. Sometimes you may get the right angle in a split of a second, other times you may need hours to find that perfect spot. One thing that I found as the most important when shooting reflections is to be flexible, both flexible in terms of approach as well as being โ€œbody flexibleโ€. Often times the best angle requires the most uncomfortable position to get it. Which is why we as photographers have to stay fit :)

_Conscience Reverberation II_ Toronto We do so muc _Conscience Reverberation II_ Toronto
We do so much of what we do out of habit and to conform to rules made by others, many times without even thinking about what we really want. The power of othersโ€™ opinion is so huge that it can completely change lives.
I know so many people who will rather suffer doing things they donโ€™t believe in and donโ€™t like just to comply with what they โ€œshouldโ€ do or because that is expected from them. What I always want to say to those people is that life is short. You see it passing by so quickly in front of your eyes and it never stops to wait for you if youโ€™re undecided and if you live the life others decide for you. And life is so fragile. We saw it so clearly this year with the pandemic. We see it every day in people regretting they didnโ€™t chase their dreams and what they believed, in people who lived according to principles that werenโ€™t theirs.
We are so privileged to live this life. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed when I think of this, when I am aware of it. I feel tears coming to my eyes in those moments. Tears of awe. I just wish we were all aware of this in every moment and we could all live the life we truly want. That we all dared to go for it and be happy. It is why we are here, after all. To be unique and to experience life to its fullest. This is what I wish you all :)

One of my favorites structures, designed by one of my favorites architects, Santiago Calatrava. I just realized, looking at my images today, that I have shot a lot of Calatrava structures these past years, in Athens, New York, Toronto, Valencia, Barcelona, Amsterdam and elsewhere. I was also lucky to participate as an architect in the design of the projects he did in Athens. Thus I guess I can say that I have a very special multidisciplinary relationship with Calatrava. :)

I have the honor to be part of the jury in the VIPA 2021 Visions International Photo Awards that has just been launched.

I am warmly inviting you all to submit your images to the contest and I wish you good luck to win one or more of the awards.

Exceptionally, this year the competition will be free as a gesture to help the photography community that was so hard hit by the pandemic. The jury is volunteering and we are all happy to provide our work pro bono to keep the photography community alive and give the chance for exposure to more photographers.

Looking forward to seeing your images. Good luck!

I havenโ€™t entered in photography contests for the past years after I had the honor to win the Photographer of the Year award at IPA International Photography Awards in 2016, but this was different. It was teamwork, and we represented Greece with my fellow photographers at one of the most distinguished international competitions, which makes me even happier to have been awarded.
We are still waiting for the team awards. Wish us luck so Greece wins. And keep an eye on this space to find out the final results.

Fluid Time V โ€“ Aligning Paths The 5th image in m Fluid Time V โ€“ Aligning Paths
The 5th image in my Fluid Time series, shot in Chicago in 2013.

Iโ€™m quite fond of this image, and I remember how much fun I had playing with the camera and the geometry to get a dynamic shot of the convergence of these 2 buildings. The image was shot with the 24 m TS lens of a Canon full frame.
The particularity of this image is that I wanted to emphasize the composition's dynamism even more by using selective focus with the tilt function of the TS lens. One of the challenges was to place the area of focus in the right spot, given that focusing with the tilt function of TS lens is entirely different than the way we regularly focus. It took quite a bit of work and patience to get it right but it was worth it.
This is one thing you need to have when working with the TS lens, patience. And the second is the desire to think out of the box and play with your gear. I just love doing that.

Fluid Time IV โ€“ Stopping Time This is the 4th im Fluid Time IV โ€“ Stopping Time
This is the 4th image in my 2013 Fluid Time series and it shows one of the iconic historical buildings in Chicago, the Wrigley Building. Finished in 1924 and built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, it was one of the first highrises built in the area.
Here too, I used the tilt function of the tilt-shift lens, as in all the images in the series, and it was actually a quite challenging image to shoot because of the intensity of the effect I needed, which wasnโ€™t easy to create. But the more challenging, the more I love it. Easy images are boring, isnโ€™t it? As everything that is too easy. :)
